Who are BIO-GRO?
BIO-GRO are an IFOAM approved auditor. The BIO-GRO Standards we produce our Natural and Flaky Salt under are one of the most comprehensive and strictest organic production standards in the world.
First formed in 1983 BIO-GRO New Zealand is the largest New Zealand organic certification agency. BIO-GRO is one of 17 IFOAM Accredited Certifying Organisations. IFOAM stands for the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements and is the international organic organisation that benchmarks organic standards and certification.
BIO-GRO is the only New Zealand certifier with IFOAM registration and this provides an important link for us in providing market access to Europe, Japan the USA and other countries. For example Sainsburys, one of the largest supermarket chains in the UK has committed to only buying organic products certified by IFOAM accredited certifiers.
BIO-GRO themselves are audited by SGS who are ISO 65 Accredited which is required for the regulated organic markets of the EU, Japan and USA.
Organic Standards Internationally
Organic standards are benchmarked internationally by the IFOAM basic standards, the Codex Alimentarius Organic Guideline and the EU Organic Regulation. Japan MAFF is currently implementing the Japan National Standard, and the US National Organic Standard was recently released. There is beginning to be increasing commonality and harmonisation between the various international organic standards.
